EA seems happy with its EA Access service on Xbox One, and apparently doesn’t care about its availability for PlayStation 4 users
Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:EA) released its "EA Access" service exclusively for Microsoft Corporation’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Xbox One last year. Apparently, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise for all Xbox One users around the world. In case you do not know, EA Access is similar to Xbox Live’s "Games with Gold" service, which provides free games every month to its subscribers. As you can guess by the name, only the titles published or developed by EA are available through the service.
Since its release, many requests have been put forward to bring the service to Sony Corp.’s (NYSE:SNE) PlayStation 4, and it being an Xbox One exclusive service has not been much appreciated by PlayStation 4 users.
Recently, in an interview with Gamespot, EA CEO Peter Moore was asked about the possibility of the said service releasing on PlayStation 4. In response to the question, Mr. Moore said that releasing the service on PS4 “doesn’t matter,” because the service is already available on Xbox One and the users love it. He said they are monitoring everything and customers seem satisfied with the service as it is.
A logical question, however, would be that if the customers are satisfied, expanding it to PlayStation 4 should help gain more sales. So why is EA not making the move then? Mr. Moore said that they have nothing to say on the matter and that Sony should answer the question.
Probably he said that because it is widely known that previously Sony had turned down the service before it was launched on grounds that the service will not offer much value to PlayStation users. Moreover, if you look at it from Sony’s perspective, their PlayStation Plus service is already doing pretty well— thanks to the mandatory requirement of the service to play games online on PlayStation 4. It is evident that they did not want any kind of competition against the service; a pretty smart strategy as a company. But this ultimately affects gamers who cannot avail this great service on PlayStation 4.
EA Access gives you big titles to play for a measly $29.99 a year. Recently, Dragon Age Inquisition was added to the list of games playable from the EA Access vault. The company is also working on offering Xbox 360 games through backward compatibility, an upcoming feature on Xbox One, this November.
Would you have liked EA Access on the PlayStation 4? Do you agree with the fact that it does not offer value? Let us know!
