Square Enix (SQNXF) Final Fantasy VII Gets Turned Into Streets Of Rage Style Beat-Em-Up By Fan

Cloud Strife and Tika return in a fan tribute to Final Fantasy VII, but with a difference

If you can’t wait for Square Enix Holdings Co. Ltd’s (ADR) (OTCMKTS:SQNXF) remake of the classic "Final Fantasy VII", then you can play a fan-made version that is actually quite fun. It’s made in the style of classic side-scrolling brawlers of yesteryear like "Streets of Rage" and "Double Dragon". The fan remake is called "Final Fantasy VII Reimagined". The two playable characters are Cloud Strife and Tifa.

The developers are PD Design Studio and according to their official website, this is “a non-profit fan made project, done purely for fun.” The team was inspired by “classic 2D Side-scrollers, such as Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara, Streets of Rage, etc, came to our minds.” The team was hoping to “incorporate some of the FFVII game play elements, such as Materia and summoning of Guardian Force into a Hack and Slash genre.”

The non-profit project has just one playable level for now and can be downloaded off the official website. It’s definitely not the remake fans were looking forward to just yet, but it gives a taste of how the game would be reimagined, as if it was released back in the 90s, but not as a role-playing title.

FF7 back in 1997 was one of the best RPGs of its time and is still loved today. It is set for a remake as a timed exclusive on Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) PlayStation 4 and hopefully will appeal to not just older fans but a new generation of fans. The original was a hit back in the day on the first PlayStation as well.

To be honest, the original is still a great game to play and it has aged well. The combat mechanics and spells are great and is pretty accessible to experienced RPG fans and newcomers. Cloud Strife is also a very likeable character and one of the best in the entire franchise. Hopefully, the Square Enix remake is as good as the original and until then, one can enjoy its side-scrolling fan tribute.
